Description: Private Commander John Bulkeley; Douglas MacArthurs Rescuer in WW II. Commander of PT-41, the torpedo boat which evacuated Douglas MacArthur, his family and others from Corregidor to Mindanao in 1942, thus enabling MacArthur to escape and to make his famous -I Shall Return- speech. On Japanese occupation 100 Dollar note, (6.25 x 3), signed at the top -John D. Bulkeley PT-41, 1942 Corregidor-. Bulkeleys PT- boat heroics in defending the Philippines from Japanese invasion in 1941/42 were the subject of the novel They Were Expendable by William Lindsay White in 1942, which was turned into the big screen epic They Were Expendable three years later by director John Ford, starring John Wayne, with Robert Montgomery playing a somewhat fictionalised Bulkeley role. The US Navy named a guided missile destroyer after him: USS Bulkeley (DDG-84), commissioned in 2001. With COA by RR Auctions.   FINE
