Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was an English military and political leader who overthrew the English monarchy and declared England to be a republican Commonwealth. He dominated the Commonwealth of England, conquered Ireland and Scotland and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658. The measures taken by him against Catholics is likened as being near-genocidal and was detested by the Royalists. He remains a controversial figure due to his use of military force to acquire and retain political power and for his role in the execution of Charles I. EF |
