Description: Charles Dickens handwritten cheque to his builder in 1862. Bank check (7 x 3.25), filled out and signed by Dickens, payable to W. Coachman for £5.13.6, 1862. Walter Couchman was involved with Charles Dickens as the builder of the mini Swiss chalet at Gads Hill, where Dickens resided for many years. Usually people of note just sign letters and cheques with staff filling out or writing the appropriate contents, but Dickens has completed the whole process in his own hand. Considering the age, the overall structure of the cheque is remarkable and one of the best examples to come to market. A few minor separations along intersecting folds, 2 vertical folds through signature and scattered tone. Pre certified PSA/DNA and with COA by RR Auctions. Charles John Huffam Dickens (7/2/1812 – 9/6/1870) was the most popular English writer of the Victorian era. Thanks to movies, audiotapes and even books, Dickens remains popular today. VG |
