Description: John Hart, Declaration of Independence signer from New Jersey (1713-1779). Engraved 12 Shilling New Jersey note, printed by Isaac Collins of Burlington (4 x 2.5) March 25, 1776, signed in ink by Hart and two others (matted and framed). Scattered toning and soiling, light creasing. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and with COA by RR Auctions.
In his capacity as a successful farmer and merchant, John Hart co-signed this bill when the relationship between Britain and the Colonies were at flashpoint. With only months to go before the revolutionary war erupted, the note made respectful references to the link between King and country. Hart was a successful farmer and leading member of his community. He was a justice of the peace, member and later speaker of the New Jersey Assembly, Committee of Safety, the Committee of Correspondence and a judge to the Court of Common Pleas and member Provincial Congress of New Jersey in 1776. On June 22nd 1778 Washington had lunch with him then had his famous Council of War at Hunt House. VG |
