Description: Ancient Greece, Attica, Island of Aegina silver Turtle (Stater) N/D (525-480 BC) (11.76g). Possible trace of chop mark on Obverse. Transitional issue, Obv sea turtle with plain shell, thin collar and small legs, Rev delineated into five incuse segments. Aegina was where the first Western coins were minted in the 6th century BC. Its geographical and economic location made it a major trading centre at the crossroads between Euboea, Athens, Corinth and the Peloponnese. aFINE |
