Description: The signature that cost a King his head; Oliver Cromwell c1650. A bold, fine and clear ink signature on a paper piece removed from a letter, neatly and expertly fitted into a plush board and below a black and white image of Cromwell, board size approx 35cm x 28cm. Despite being around 375 years old, this is one of the best preserved examples seen in some time. Very rare. With Guarantee of Authenticity from Exczecher Memorabilia, 28 May 2004. Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was an English military and political leader who overthrew the English monarchy and declared England to be a republican Commonwealth. He dominated the Commonwealth of England, conquered Ireland and Scotland and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658. The measures taken by him against Catholics is likened as being near-genocidal and was detested by the Royalists. He remains a controversial figure due to his use of military force to acquire and retain political power and for his role in the execution of Charles I. EF |

Lot: 1087 Category: Memorabilia/Documents Description: Charles Dickens handwritten cheque to his builder in 1862. Bank check (7 x 3.25), filled out and signed by Dickens, payable to W. Coachman for £5.13.6, 1862. Walter Couchman was involved with Charles Dickens as the builder of the mini Swiss chalet at Gads Hill, where Dickens resided for many years.
