Lot: 1478     Category: Holey Dollars and Dumps
Description: Holey Dollar Five Shillings NSW 1813 contemporary forgery. Struck on an 1814 J.J Ferdinand VII 8 Reales, Mexico mint. Ex PJ Downie Sale 1964 (Lot 924) and P Spalding collection. Illustrated in Spalding pp 236 (fig 84) and Mira/Noble (C 1814/1) pp 71. Interesting in that the forger had noted a previous omission of the date (1813) but forgot to engrave it in reverse again, AND apparently a year after Holey Dollars were made as the host coin is dated 1814. Very rare and highly collectable.   gF/aVF
